Kretschmer, Otto (1912-1998)

German U-boat commander; highly successful, he was awarded the Knights Cross for sinking seven ships on a single patrol. He is generally credited with sinking about 300,000 tons of Allied shipping in 18 months of patrolling until he was trapped by British destroyers 27 March 1941. He scuttled his boat and both he and his crew were taken prisoner.
