Kristiansand

Seaport and administrative centre of Vest-Agder county, on the south coast of Norway; population (1995 est) 69,300. The third-largest port of Norway, it is 280 km/174 mi southwest of Oslo. Industries include textiles, timber, electrometallurgy, and electrochemicals.

Kristiansand was founded in 1641 by Christian IV of Denmark and Norway, and the Renaissance street plan is still evident in the old parts of the city. Christiansholm Festning, a coastal fort, was built in the same period. The city has ferry services to Hirtshals in Denmark and Newcastle in the UK.
