Kristiansand| Seaport and administrative centre of Vest-Agder county, on the south coast of Norway; population (2007 est) 77,800. The third-largest port of Norway, it is 280 km/174 mi southwest of Oslo. Industries include textiles, timber, electrometallurgy, and electrochemicals. |
| Kristiansand was founded in 1641 by Christian IV of Denmark and Norway, and the Renaissance street plan is still evident in the old parts of the city. Christiansholm Festning, a coastal fort, was built in the same period. The city has ferry services to Hirtshals in Denmark and Newcastle in the UK. |
