Kristianstad

City and administrative centre in the northeast of Skåne county, southeast Sweden; population (2000 est) 31,000. It is situated east of Hälsingborg, 22 km/14 mi from the Baltic coast. The main industry is textile manufacture, and there is a 17th-century church.

Kristianstad was founded in 1614 by the Danish king Christian IV as a fort against the Swedes in the North and to protect important trade routes. Its Renaissance features are still evident in the ramparts and gridded streets. The town lost its strategic importance as a border fortification when Kristianstad became Swedish in 1658.
