Kristol, Irving

Kristol, Irving (William) (1920– )

US editor and educator. He graduated from the City College of New York in 1940, and became active in left-wing political circles before seeing combat action with the US Army in France (1944–45). Gradually moving to the right, he edited Encounter magazine (1953–58), and, from 1965, The Public Interest magazine. He taught social sciences at New York University (1969–88). His Reflections of A Neoconservative appeared in 1983. The son of Jewish immigrants, Kristol was born in New York City.
