Kriti

Greek for Crete, an island in the eastern Mediterranean Sea.

kriti

An important genre of south Indian (Carnatic) music. Essentially a song in three sections (pallavi, anupallavi, charanam), it is often performed with the addition of improvised sections. Kritis also form an important part of the solo instrumental repertoire. Important composers include Tyagaraja (1767–1847) and Muttuswami Dikshitar (1775–1835).
