Krol, John Joseph

Krol, John Joseph (1910–1996)

US Catholic prelate. He taught canon law, and held administrative posts in the Cleveland diocese, becoming auxiliary bishop and vicar general in 1953. As archbishop of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1961–88), he played a leading, largely conservative role among American prelates at the Second Vatican Council, and was president of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops (1971–74). Krol was born in Cleveland, Ohio. He was ordained in 1937, and earned a doctorate in theology in 1942.
