Kshessinskaya, Mathilde (1872-1971)

Russian dancer, reputedly the greatest ballerina in Tsarist Russia. She enjoyed great influence through her intimate friendships with Tsar Nicholas II and a number of Russian grand dukes.

Kshessinskaya was the first Russian dancer to assume the role of Aurora in The Sleeping Beauty and the also first to learn (from Italian ballerinas) the trick step of multiple fouettes. She married the Grand Duke André in 1900, and after the revolution they settled in Paris, where she taught many generations of dancers, working until she was almost 90 years old.
