Kubelík, Jan (1880-1940)

Czech violinist. He was taught by his father, a gardener and good amateur musician, and made his first public appearance in Prague in 1888. In 1892 he entered the Conservatory as a pupil of Ševčik and began his real career with a concert in Vienna in 1898. He made his London debut in 1900 and worked in the USA from 1902, retiring in 1940. Among his compositions are six violin concertos.
