Kubrick, Stanley (1928-1999)

US film director, producer, and screenwriter. His work was eclectic in subject matter and ambitious in scale and technique. It includes Paths of Glory (1957), Dr Strangelove (1964), 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), A Clockwork Orange (1971), and Full Metal Jacket (1987). His last film, Eyes Wide Shut, was completed just before his death and was released in 1999.

A former photographer in the USA, Kubrick was based in England for much of his film-making career. Critically acclaimed and much admired among his film-making peers, he was responsible for Fear and Desire (1953), Killer's Kiss (1955), The Killing (1956), Lolita (1962), Barry Lyndon (1975), and The Shining (1980). More than any of his US contemporaries, he achieved complete artistic control over his films.

Kubrick's work is characterized by its serious ambition, its thematization of dehumanization, whether in man's relationship with technology as in 2001 or in the military training of Full Metal Jacket, and the director's own much-publicized perfectionism.
