Kuching

Capital and port of Sarawak state on the west coast of Borneo, Malaysia, on the Sarawak River; population (2000 est) 152,300. Exports include timber, bauxite, pepper, and sago. Industries include boatbuilding, vegetable-oil products such as soap, and the manufacture of cigarettes, furniture, and matches. Helped by the local airport, the tourist industry is also significant and attractions include Bako National Park and the seaside resort of Santubong.
