Kuhn, Gustav (1947– )

Austrian conductor. He studied with Swarowsky and Karajan in Vienna, and worked at the Turkish State Opera 1970–73, making his debut with Fidelio. He was principal at the Netherlands Opera 1974–75 and the Dortmund Opera 1975–77; music director at the Bern Opera 1979–83 and the Bonn Opera 1982–85; and artistic director of the Rome Opera in 1986. From 1977 he worked at the Vienna Staatsoper, making his debut with Elektra. He has also worked at Glyndebourne (Die Entführung aus dem Serail, 1980); the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden (Don Giovanni, 1981); Chicago (1981, his US debut); Pesaro (where he revived Rossini's Ermione in 1987); and Verona (where he conducted Don Carlos at the Arena in 1992).
