Kuhnau, Johann (1660-1722)

German organist, harpsichordist, composer, and writer on music. He was Johann Sebastian Bach's predecessor in the post of cantor at St Thomas's Church, Leipzig. His biblical sonatas for harpsichord are early examples of programme music.

He was cantor at Zittau and went to Leipzig in 1682. In 1684 he became organist at St Thomas's, in 1700 was appointed music director of the university and the churches of St Nicholas and St Thomas, and in 1701 became cantor of St Thomas's.

Other works include motets on hymn tunes and other church music; partitas and other pieces for harpsichord, including seven sonatas entitled Frische Clavier-Früchte, and the six sonatas Biblische Historien (1700).
