Ranz des Vaches

Swiss cowherds' song or alphorn signal by which the cattle are called in June from the valleys to the mountain pastures. There are many different tunes, varying according to the cantons or even districts. They are metrically very irregular and use only the natural notes of the alphorn. In classical music versions are heard in Gioacchino Rossini's William Tell overture, Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony (link between last two movements), and the Scène aux champs in Hector Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique.
