Kuijken, Sigiswald (1944– )

Belgian conductor and violinist. In 1972 he was co-founder of the period-instrument orchestra La Petite Bande, performing works by Handel, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Haydn, and Bach. His ensemble the Age of Enlightenment gave its first London concert in 1986. His brothers are Wieland Kuijken (1938– ), a cellist and viola da gamba player, and Barthold Kuijken (1949– ) a flautist and recorder player.

He studied at the Brussels Conservatory, and has taught baroque violin at The Hague Conservatory since 1971. He founded the Kuijken string quartet in 1986. In 1989 he co-directed the ‘Towards Bach’ series at the South Bank, London, and conducted Haydn's L'infideltà delusa in Antwerp, Belgium, in 1990.
