Kulka, Janos (1929– )

Hungarian conductor. He conducted at the Budapest Opera 1953–56 and at the Bavarian State Opera 1957–59. Appointments have included principal at the Hamburg Opera 1961–64; music director at Wuppertal 1964–75; chief conductor at the Stuttgart State Opera from 1976; and conductor of the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie, 1976–87. He made his US debut in Boston in 1969. Among the premieres he has conducted is Boehmer's Doktor Faust (Paris Opéra, 1985).
