Kumamoto

City on the Shira River, Kyushu island, Japan, 80 km/50 mi east of Nagasaki; population (2005) 669,600. It is the seat of the prefecture of the same name and a centre for fishing, food processing, and textile industries. The city was a military stronghold until the 19th century and remained a garrison city until 1945. The castle was built in 1601.

The graves of Hosokawa Gracia (an early Christian convert) and Miyamoto Musashi (a legendary two-handed swordsman) can be found in the city.
