Kumyk

Member of any of a group of northern Caucasus people numbering 282,000 (1989). They live mainly in the autonomous republic of Dagestan, in the lowland area along the Caspian shore. They are Muslims and speak a West Turkic language. The Kumyks came under Russian rule in the 16th century. The Kumyk khanate was abolished in 1847 and in 1989 a Kumyk assembly voted for self-determination.
