Kunersdorf, Battle of

In the Seven Years' War, Russian victory over Frederick the Great on 12 August 1759 about 20 km/12 mi west of what is now Swiebodzin, Poland. Frederick was attempting to save Dresden from the advancing Russian army, about 90,000-strong. Having somewhat less than half this number, Frederick decided to make an encircling attack from the flanks, but his plans were ruined by his troops getting lost in the forests and failing to coordinate their attacks. He was decisively defeated by the Russians, losing half his army and almost all his artillery, and Dresden fell three weeks later.
