Austrian bass-baritone. He studied in Vienna and made his debut in 1933 in Breslau. He sang in the Glyndebourne chorus in 1935, returning in 1948 as Guglielmo. He performed in Vienna from 1940; at the Salzburg Festival from 1942 (making his debut as Mozart's Figaro); at Bayreuth in 1943 as Beckmesser; at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden (where he made his house debut in 1947 as Leporello during a Vienna State Opera visit); and at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York (where he made his house debut in 1952 as Leporello).
