Kuopio

Capital of Kuopio province in eastern central Finland; population (1996) 85,300. It produces timber, matches, and flour, and has distilleries. Situated on Lake Kallavesi, it is a tourist and sports centre. The town was founded 1782 by Gustavus III of Sweden, and has a university.
