US composer and clarinettist. He made his debut as a soloist in New York in 1946. He taught at the Sarah Lawrence College from 1951. His music derives from jazz, electronics, and serialism.

In a Garden (1949) and Doctor Faustus Lights the Lights (1953), both after Gertrude Stein.

Orchestral

two piano concertos (1948, 1978); 11 symphonies (1950-83); concerto for cello and jazz band (1962); violin and clarinet concertos (1976, 1984); Savage Landscape for orchestra (1989).

Chamber

five string quartets; Sound Phantoms, ten pieces for chamber ensemble, no. 10 (1981); Top Brass Five for five trumpets (1989).

Vocal

Wicke Combinations, song cycle for mezzo and piano (1989); A Crucible for the Moon for soprano, alto saxophone, and percussion orchestra (1986).
