Kurath, Gertrude Prokosch

Kurath, Gertrude Prokosch (1903-1992)

US musicologist. She danced and taught professionally as ‘Tula’ 1922-46 before turning to the study of American Indian dance. She did extensive fieldwork and published writings on Iroquois, Pueblo, Six Nations, and Great Lakes dance; she also contributed to dance theory and notation. She founded the Dance Research Center at Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 1962.

Kurath was born in Chicago, Illinois.
