Kureishi, Hanif (1954- )

English dramatist, film-maker, and novelist. Much of his work explores the interaction of Asian and Anglo communities living in the UK. His early plays Outskirts (1981) and Birds of Passage (1983) were followed by the screenplays for the films My Beautiful Laundrette (1985) and Sammy and Rosie Get Laid (1987), both directed by Stephen Frears. He wrote and directed the film London Kills Me (1991).

Kureishi's novel The Buddha of Suburbia (1990) was adapted for the screen in a popular television miniseries in 1993. He also wrote The Black Album (1995), and wrote the screenplays for My Son the Fanatic (1997) and Intimacy (2001), based on his 1998 book. His later works include the novels Midnight All Day (1999) and Gabriel's Gift (2001), and a collection of eight stories The Body (2002).
