Kuropatkin, Alexei Nikolaievich (1848–1921)

Russian general. He distinguished himself as Chief of Staff during the Russo-Turkish War 1877–78, was commander-in-chief in Manchuria 1903, and resigned after his defeat at Mukden (now Shenyang) in 1905 in the Russo-Japanese War. During World War I he commanded the armies on the northern front until 1916.
