Kuwait

Chief port and capital of the state of Kuwait, on the southern shore of Kuwait Bay; population (1995 est) 28,700. The city is also the capital of the governorate of Kuwait; population (2000 est) 382,400. Kuwait is a banking and investment centre which grew rapidly in size and importance as the country's oil industry developed in the second half of the 20th century. The city was heavily damaged during the Gulf War of 1990-91 against the invading forces of Iraq.

Kuwait University dates from 1966.
