Kuwana

Coastal city in Mie prefecture, Japan, situated near the mouth of the Kiso River, 24 km/15 mi southwest of Nagoya; population (1995 est) 103,000. The city is the centre of the Northern Ise Industrial Zone, and effectively an industrial suburb of Nagoya. Industries include the manufacture of iron castings, bearings, enamelware, textiles, machinery, motor vehicle tyres, and processed foods. Tourists are attracted by the nearby Suigo Prefectural Park.

Kuwana prospered in the Edo period (1600–1868) as a port and post-station.
