KirghizMember of a pastoral people numbering approximately 1.5 million. The Kirghiz live in Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, China (Xinjiang), and Afghanistan (Wakhan corridor). They are Sunni Muslims, and their Turkic language belongs to the Altaic family. The most isolated group, because of its geographical situation and its international border problems, is found in Afghanistan. The highest political authority is traditionally entitled khan. During the winter the Kirghiz live in individual family yurts (tents made of felt). In summer they come together in larger settlements of up to 20 yurts. They herd sheep, goats, and yaks, and use Bactrian camels for transporting their possessions.
