Lévis-Lauzon

Lévis-Lauzon

City in southern Québec, Canada, on the St Lawrence River, directly opposite Québec City; population (1991) 39,500. The local economy is based on shipbuilding and ship repair; the largest dry dock in Canada is here. The Caisse Populaire (cooperative bank) is another major employer, and there are diverse industries.

Lévis and industrial Lauzon developed separately and were merged in 1989. The Collège de Lévis (1853) is here.

History

The British general James Wolfe used the cliffs here for gun emplacements during the siege of Québec in 1759. Fort Number 1 at Pointe-Lévis, built to protect against US attack during the American Civil War, is a national historic site.
