Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.07 sec.

L'Enfant, Pierre Charles (1754-1825)

French-born US architect and engineer. He is remembered for his survey and plan for the city of Washington 1791-92. Although he was dismissed from the project before he was able to design any major buildings, the constructed layout is much as he conceived it, clearly reflecting the plan of his native Versailles.

After having served on the American side in the War of Independence, L'Enfant received several important commissions, notably Federal House, Philadelphia.
