LZW compression

Data compression system used to reduce the size of data files and thus shorten the time needed to transmit them. LZW compression is the basis of the GIF graphics interchange format. When US computer company Unisys announced in 1995 that it wanted licence fees for the use of LZW compression for commercial applications, users began to develop alternatives such as Portable Network Graphics (PNG).
