La Basée, Battle of

    0.02 sec.

La Basée, Battle of

In World War I, inconclusive battle between British and German forces in northern France October 1914.

The German 6th Army took Lille before the British force could secure the town, while the 4th Army arrived and attacked the exposed British flank at Ypres. The British were driven back and the Germans took La Basée and Neuve Chapelle. The British held off further German advances until early November when both sides concentrated their attention on the battle for Ypres, so the battle around La Bassée and Armentières died out and the line stabilized.
