La Chaussée, Pierre Claude Nivelle de (1692–1754)

French dramatist. His work combined the tragedy of common life and pathetic comedy, and was described as comédie larmoyante (‘comedy with tears’). Among his plays are Le Préjugé à la mode 1735, Mélanide 1741, and La Gouvernante 1747.
