La Crosse

La Crosse

City in southwestern Wisconsin, USA, at the confluence of the Black, La Crosse, and Mississippi rivers, 200 km/124 mi northwest of Madison; seat of La Crosse County; population (2000) 51,800. It is the processing and marketing centre for the area's agricultural products; industries include plastics, brewing, heating systems, rubber products, electrical machinery, and also tourism.

The settlement began as a French trading post in 1841 and grew as a lumber town in the 19th century. It was named Prairie La Crosse after the American Indian game of lacrosse, and was incorporated as a city in 1856.

The city is the seat of Viterbo College (1890) and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse (1909).

A La Crosse, Wisconsin hospital has asked an artist to remove her paintings depicting Jesus as a rabbi.
He was president of the La Crosse Area REALTORS Association in 1985, president of the Wisconsin REALTORS Association in 1992, and was named REALTOR of the year by both organizations.
When it happened again, he was ready, reported the La Crosse Tribune.
