La Grande

City and administrative headquarters of Union County, northeastern Oregon, on the Grande Ronde River, 64 km/40 mi southeast of Pendleton; population (2000) 12,300. It is a trading centre for cattle, lumber, and wheat producers. Products include particle boards, trailers, and chemical products. Since the early 1990s wild mushrooms from the Blue Mountains have become an important source of income.

La Grande was settled in 1861. It is the seat of Eastern Oregon State College (1929). The Wallowa-Whitman National Forest lies to the east and west of the city.
