La Habra

City in southwestern California, 32 km/20 mi southeast of central Los Angeles; population (1990) 51,300. Oil and agriculture have been joined by electronics and other manufacturing in the city's economy. La Habra grew most quickly in the 1950s and 1960s.

Named after a local pass (abra) in the hills, it was settled in the 1860s, and became a trade centre for a citrus fruit and avocado growing area. The arrival of the Pacific Electric Railroad in 1908 and the discovery of oil in the Coyote Hills spurred growth.
