La Junta

City and administrative headquarters of Otero County, southeastern Colorado, on the Arkansas River, 97 km/60 mi southeast of Pueblo; population (2000) 7,600. It is a trade and rail centre for cattle and produce. There are also canneries and meatpacking plants, railway repair workshops, and cattle auction facilities.

Originally at the site of the Bent's Fort fur-trading post, now a National Historic Site 13 km/8 mi to the northeast, La Junta was moved with the arrival of the Santa Fe Railroad in 1875. It is the seat of Otero Junior College (1941) and the birthplace (1935) of novelist Ken Kesey. Comanche National Grassland is southwest of the city.
