La Malbaie

City in southern Québec, Canada, 122 km/76 mi northeast of Québec City, at the mouth of the River Malbaie on the St Lawrence River; population (1990) 4,000. The area has long been renowned for its summer resorts. There is some industry in the city.

Resorts include Pointe-au-Pic, with its huge Manoir Richelieu (now a hotel), and Cap-à-l'Aigle. La Malbaie is popular with artists and performers.

History

It was visited in 1608 by the French pioneer Samuel de Champlain, who found it a difficult anchorage (hence the name), and was settled (as Murray Bay) by Scots after the 1760s British conquest.
