La Mirada

City in southwestern California, 31 km/19 mi southeast of central Los Angeles, on Coyote Creek; population (1990) 40,500. After the 1880s it became a centre of fruit cultivation, home to the regional olive industry; today it is largely residential.

Once part of a vast Spanish land grant, Rancho Los Coyotes, the city was incorporated in 1960. It is the seat of Biola University (1908).
