La Porte

City and administrative headquarters of La Porte County, northwestern Indiana, 53 km/33 mi east of Gary; population (1990) 21,500. Its products include boilers, radiators, steel castings, rubber goods, baby carriages, farm implements, clothing, and wine. In the vicinity of several lakes, it is also a popular year-round resort.

La Porte was founded by French pioneers in 1830. Soldiers Memorial Park and Ski Valley offer various recreational activities, and the Kingsbury State Fish and Wildlife Area is to the southeast.

La Porte

City in southeastern Texas, on Galveston Bay, near the mouth of the Houston Ship Channel and 32 km/20 mi east of central Houston; population (1990) 27,900. It has insecticide and petrochemical plants and is a deepwater port, but is also residential and a beach resort centre. The Houston Yacht Club is here.
