La Prairie

City in southern Québec, Canada, on the south bank of the St Lawrence River (here widened into the Bassin de Laprairie), 13 km/8 mi southeast of central Montréal; population (1991) 14,900. Primarily a residential suburb, it has some diversified industry and summer resort trade.

History

Granted as a seigneurie to Jesuits in 1647, it developed slowly; in 1691 it repelled an attack by New England forces. In 1836 the first railway in Canada ran from here to St Jean-sur-Richelieu.
