La Salle

City in north-central Illinois, on the Illinois River, 21 km/13 mi west of Ottawa; population (1990) 9,700. Part of a three-city area that includes Peru and Oglesby, it manufactures chemicals, electrical equipment, engines, and clocks. There are also zinc and steel works here.

First settled about 1830, La Salle grew with the opening of the Illinois and Michigan Canal, which was followed by the arrival of the Illinois Central and Rock Island railways in the 1850s. The city was a coalmining centre until World War II.

Matthiesen and Starved Rock state parks are to the southeast.

La Salle

City in southern Québec, Canada, on the south shore of the Ile de Montréal, 11 km/7 mi southwest of central Montréal; population (1991 est) 73,800. It is primarily a residential suburb, with diversified industries including chemicals and pharmaceuticals, heating and cooling equipment, food products, and beverages.
