La Salle County

County in north-central Illinois; area 2,950 sq km/1,139 sq mi; population (1990) 106,900. Its capital is Ottawa. The county is agricultural, and has industries based to some degree on its coal, limestone, silica, and other minerals. The La Salle nuclear plant (1982) is to the southeast of Ottawa, near La Salle Lake.

The Illinois River flows east–west through the county, and is joined by the Fox River at Ottawa. Except for Streator and Mendota, all urban areas, including Peru, La Salle, Ottawa, and Marseilles, are along the Illinois. The Vermilion River flows into the Illinois from the southeast.
