La Tuque

City in southern Québec, Canada, 120 km/75 mi north of Trois-Rivières, on the St-Maurice River, in a vast forest region; population (1991) 10,000. The economy centres around forestry and wood-based industries. Hunting, fishing, camping, canoeing, and skiing are also important.

Founded around a pulp mill in the 1900s, the city derives its name from a nearby mountain shaped like a trapper's hat called a tuque.
