La Unión| Town and port on the south coast of El Salvador, on the Gulf of Fonseca; population (1995) 39,600. Formerly El Salvador's most important port, it is the administrative capital of the department of La Unión. It is the main commercial town of the region, which produces coffee, sugar, and cattle. |
| Through its commercial port, Cutuco, about 1.6 km/1 mi away, La Unión handles about half of El Salvador's exports and imports. By the late 1990s the port was run down and the town in a state of neglect, with high unemployment. |
