La Union

Province on the west coast of Luzon Island in the Philippines; area 1,492 sq km/576 sq mi; population (1995) 597,000. The capital is San Fernando. It is rugged and hilly in the east with a narrow lowland coastal strip to the west. The land is generally poor with rice being the main crop. Tourism is centred on Bauang, one of the most popular beach resorts in northern Luzon.
