La Verne

City in southwestern California, 45 km/28 mi northeast of Los Angeles and just west of Claremont; population (1990) 30,900. A citrus-packing centre, it was settled during the 1890s land boom, with the 1891 arrival of the Santa Fe Railroad.

The University of La Verne (1891) is here; the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds are immediately to the south.
