shahadah

The first duty of the Five Pillars of Islam. It is a statement of faith – ‘I bear witness that there is no God but Allah and Muhammad is the Prophet of Allah’. For Muslims, the affirmation of the shahadah entails living one's life in a way that upholds its truth. The shahadah is said first thing on waking and last thing at night. It is whispered into the ear of a newborn baby and said if death is thought to be imminent.
