Labille-Guiard, Adelaide

    0.18 sec.

Labille-Guiard, Adelaide (1749-1803)

French portrait painter. Originally a pastellist and miniature-painter, she turned to painting in oils and devoted herself entirely to portraiture. She received commissions from the royal family and became the favourite painter of Marie Antoinette.

Her reputation was comparable to that of her contemporary Marie Vigée-Lebrun, the fashionable portraitist. Labille-Guiard was also a popular teacher.
