Lachute

City in southern Québec, Canada, 64 km/40 mi northwest of Montréal, on the Rivière du Nord (North River); population (1991) 11,700. It has diversified industries.

Settled in the 1790s, it developed in the 19th century as a grain milling and later a paper and textile-making centre, employing power from the falls after which it is named.
