Lackawanna County

County in northeastern Pennsylvania; area 1,194 sq km/461 sq mi; population (1990) 219,000. Its capital and major city is Scranton. The county is heavily industrialized and urbanized, and its economic life has depended on its proximity to vast beds of anthracite coal.

Affected by the decline in the state's mining activities, much of the county has endured high unemployment and depressed income since the 1970s.
